Women And Cardiovascular Disease Addressing Disparities In Care

    by Kevin R Campbell  (Author)
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the US and Europe today. Over the last 20 years, many innovations in technology have allowed for improved therapies for heart attack and stroke and overall outcomes have significantly improved. Death rates from cardiovascular disease in men are declining. However, even with these improvements in care, death rates for women remain unchanged. This book will explore these gender disparities in care in depth — specific sections will be devoted to answering the questions of why they are occurring and what healthcare providers and women can do to effect change and narrow the gender gap in cardiovascular care.Ultimately, this book is designed to open the eyes of healthcare providers, medical professionals and policy makers — as well as potential female patients — and should serve as a “call to action” to promote better cardiovascular care for women. Through education, awareness and advocacy women worldwide will benefit, the gap will begin to close and better cardiovascular care can be provided for all.

Vortex Formation in the Cardiovascular System

Original price was: $178.00.Current price is: $130.00.

Vortex Formation in the Cardiovascular System

by Arash Kheradvar  (Author), Gianni Pedrizzetti  (Author)Vortex Formation in the Cardiovascular System will recapitulate the current knowledge about the vortex formation in the cardiovascular system, from mechanics to cardiology. This can facilitate the interaction between basic scientists and clinicians on the topic of the circulatory system. The book begins with a synopsis of the fundamentals aspects of fluid mechanics to give the reader the essential background to address the proceeding chapters. Then the fundamental elements of vortex dynamics will be discussed, explaining the conditions for their formation and the rules governing their dynamics. The main equations are accompanied by mathematical models. Cardiovascular vortex formation is first analyzed in physiological, healthy conditions in the heart chambers and in the large arterial vessels. The analysis is initially presented with an intuitive appeal grounded on the physical phenomena and a focus on its clinical significance. In the proceeding chapters, the knowledge gained from either clinical or basic science literature will be discussed. The corresponding mathematical elements will finally be presented to ensure the adequate diligence. The proceeding chapters ensue to the analysis of pathological conditions, when the reader may have developed the ability to recognize normal from abnormal vortex formation phenomenon. Pathological vortex formation represents vortices that develop at sites where normally laminar flow should exist, e.g. stenosis and aneurisms. This analysis naturally leads to the interaction of vortices due to the surgical procedures with respect to prediction of changes in vortex formation. The existing techniques, from medical imaging to numerical simulations, to explore vortex flows in the cardiovascular systems will also be described. The presentations are accompanied by the mathematical definitions can that be understandable for reader without the advanced mathematical background, while an interested reader with more advanced knowledge in mathematics can be referred to references for further quantitative analyses. The book pursues the objective to transfer the fundamental vortex formation phenomena with application to the cardiovascular system to the reader. This book will be a valuable support for physicians in the evaluation of vortex influence on diagnosis and therapeutic choices. At the same time, the book will provide the rigorous information for research scientists, either from medicine and mechanics, working on the cardiovascular circulation incurring with the physics of vortex dynamics.

Type 2 Diabetes Cardiovascular and Related Complications and Evidence Based Complementary Treatments

Original price was: $210.00.Current price is: $170.00.

Type 2 Diabetes Cardiovascular and Related Complications and Evidence Based Complementary Treatments

by Robert Fried (Author), Richard M. Carlton (Author) Approximately 29 million Americans are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes annually. Of that number, only about 36 percent (10.44 million diabetes sufferers) achieve satisfactory medical outcomes and would need additional help—rarely available—to reliably control their glucose levels. Contrary to popular belief, although anti-diabetic medications can lower sugar levels, nevertheless they have a poor performance track record because inflammation in the blood vessels persists. This book details recent scientific findings that cardiovascular, kidney, vision, peripheral nervous system, and other body damage caused by chronic high levels of blood sugar (hyperglycemia) in Type 2 diabetes is actually due to excessive generation of unopposed free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS). These, in turn, cause chronic systemic inflammation and dysfunction of the endothelial lining of the arterial blood vessels, jeopardizing the formation of the protective molecule nitric oxide (NO), thus severely impairing the blood supply to every organ and tissue in the body. This book also catalogues the evidence that chronic hyperglycemia causes profound and often irreversible damage—even long before Type 2 diabetes has been diagnosed. In addition, because conventional prescription treatments are, unfortunately, often inadequate, the book details evidence-based complementary means of blood sugar control.

Over the last 23 years our identity and mission of the TSRA have expanded to meet the needs of our members by providing peer-based resources and support for cardiothoracic surgery residents to succeed throughout training and launch successful careers. The prior edition of this book, TSRA Clinical Scenarios in Cardiothoracic Surgery, published in 2013 was tremendously successful. The first edition of this book aimed to augment available resident educational resources. It focused on knowledge application in a dynamic decision-making capacity highlighting surgical technique, practical knowledge and clinical acumen based on a variety of different clinical case scenarios. This edition aims to update this review resource while simultaneously expanding the scope of clinical scenarios to keep pace with the ever-changing clinical cardiothoracic training environment. The aim of this book is to review common, high-yield clinical scenarios that may surface during a cardiothoracic surgeon’s practice in congenital, thoracic, or adult cardiac surgery. It was written by residents for residents. We meticulously reviewed and edited all previous clinical case scenario chapters focusing on updated clinical and scientific evidence. The first edition contained 72 chapters authored by over 50 residents and faculty from across the country. The new edition contains 19 new chapters (36-chapter revisions) with 91 chapters authored by 159 residents and faculty nationwide! We have maintained the structure and flow of the book utilizing the three major sections of cardiothoracic surgery: General Thoracic Surgery, Adult Cardiac while expanding the congenital section to be Congenital Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Tips and Tricks in Interventional Cardiology

by Shuvanan Ray (Author) This book “Tips and Tricks in Interventional Cardiology” focuses on key procedures and techniques involved in interventional cardiology. Interventional cardiology has proliferated as the first approach in managing coronary artery disease. This book comprises of 15 chapters that discuss a number of practical concepts that will advance the skills of an interventional cardiologist in the catheterization laboratory. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was introduced by Andreas Grüntzig in 1977, after that alternative percutaneous approaches to balloon angioplasty (atherectomy, laser, stents have been introduced. Interventional cardiologists have now expanded their skills to structural interventions (ASD, VSD, PFO, valvular heart disease) and peripheral interventions (carotids, subclavian, renal, iliac). First chapter discusses the needs and requirements of PCI. Following chapters discusses PCI—work station, access, hemodynamics in Cathlab, radiographic views, guide catheters, guidewires, balloons—the balloon catheters, drug eluting stents and non-angiographic lesion assessment. In addition, the book also covers drugs used in cathlab, difficult subsets, structural heart disease, congenital heart disease and complication of percutaneous coronary intervention.
