Pharmacological Treatment of Chronic Stable Angina Pectoris

by Pablo Avanzas (Editor), Juan Carlos Kaski (Editor)
This book is intended for general cardiologists and other physicians involved in the care of patients with chronic stable angina (CSA). The goal of this book is to update clinicians on recent data on the medical management of patients with CSA. Ischemic heart disease remains a major public health problem. Chronic stable angina is the initial manifestation of ischemic heart disease in approximately one half of patients. Stable coronary artery disease is generally characterized by episodes of reversible myocardial demand/supply mismatch, related to ischaemia or hypoxia, which are usually inducible by exercise, emotion or other stress and reproducible—but, which may also be occurring spontaneously. Such episodes of ischaemia/hypoxia are commonly associated with transient chest discomfort (angina pectoris). The aim of the management of CSA is to reduce symptoms and improve prognosis. The management of these patients encompasses lifestyle modification, control of coronary artery disease risk factors, evidence-based pharmacological therapy and patient education. All patients with stable angina should be offered optimal medical treatment, defined as one or two anti-anginal drugs as necessary, plus drugs for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Regarding the role of revascularization, randomised trials provide compelling evidence that myocardial revascularization by coronary artery bypass grafting or by percutaneous coronary intervention improves symptoms of angina relative to continued medical treatment.

    Pericarditis: From Diagnosis to Treatment

Original price was: $95.00.Current price is: $60.00.

    Pericarditis: From Diagnosis to Treatment

"Pericarditis refers to swelling and irritation of the pericardium, which is the thin, saclike tissues surrounding the heart, usually leading to sharp chest pain. This condition can arise due to viral infections, but the cause is often unknown. In this book, various causes and types of pericarditis are elucidated, and treatment options are outlined across six chapters. Chapter One deals with Dressler syndrome, which is secondary pericarditis that occurs after myocardial injury and is widely purported to be of autoimmune etiology. Chapter Two discusses the treatment of pericarditis and the management of potential complications. Chapter Three addresses the clinical and diagnostic features of purulent pericarditis, which is the presence of suppuration in the pericardium, as well as therapeutic options. Chapter Four emphasizes the emerging adverse events of vaccine-induced pericarditis, summarizing its epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, and limitation. Chapter Five concerns constrictive pericarditis, which arises due to the scarring and loss of elasticity in post-acute pericarditis. Finally, Chapter Six addresses the clinical and diagnostic features of COVID-19-induced pericarditis, as well as the therapeutic options"--

Percutaneous Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases in Women

Original price was: $139.00.Current price is: $100.00.

Percutaneous Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases in Women

This book describes a wide range of interventional procedures currently employed in the treatment of cardiac diseases in women with the aim of enabling not only interventional cardiologists but also cardiologists and cardiac surgeons to refine their approach to female patients and thus improve outcomes. The book reflects the increasing awareness of gender differences with regard to coronary artery disease and structural valve heart disease. Examples include myocardial infarction, which carries a worse prognosis in women in part because they suffer from this disease mostly in the 7th decade of life, present more frequently with hemodynamic instability and later from symptom onset, and have fragile, small and tortuous coronary arteries that are more technically demanding in the context of primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Another example is symptomatic aortic stenosis, which carries a better prognosis in women who undergo trans-catheter aortic valve implantation partially due to a better annulus-prosthesis match, which leads to less residual paravalvular regurgitation, better left ventricular function and lower aggregation of comorbidities. Further, in women left ventricular response to aortic stenosis is typified by muscle hypertrophy with a small ventricular cavity. These differences are reflected in the clinical manifestations and their impact on diagnosis, treatment, and choice of tools and devices for use in interventional procedures. By explaining the at times subtle variances in disease and treatment techniques for female and male patients, this book will help practitioners select the most appropriate procedures and materials in a range of settings.

Patient Specific Modeling of the Cardiovascular System Technology Driven Personalized Medicine

Original price was: $163.00.Current price is: $120.00.

Patient Specific Modeling of the Cardiovascular System Technology Driven Personalized Medicine

by Roy C.P. Kerckhoffs (Editor) Peter Hunter Computational physiology for the cardiovascular system is entering a new and exciting phase of clinical application. Biophysically based models of the human heart and circulation, based on patient-specific anatomy but also informed by po- lation atlases and incorporating a great deal of mechanistic understanding at the cell, tissue, and organ levels, offer the prospect of evidence-based diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The clinical value of patient-specific modeling is well illustrated in application areas where model-based interpretation of clinical images allows a more precise analysis of disease processes than can otherwise be achieved. For example, Chap. 6 in this volume, by Speelman et al. , deals with the very difficult problem of trying to predict whether and when an abdominal aortic aneurysm might burst. This requires automated segmentation of the vascular geometry from magnetic re- nance images and finite element analysis of wall stress using large deformation elasticity theory applied to the geometric model created from the segmentation. The time-varying normal and shear stress acting on the arterial wall is estimated from the arterial pressure and flow distributions. Thrombus formation is identified as a potentially important contributor to changed material properties of the arterial wall. Understanding how the wall adapts and remodels its material properties in the face of changes in both the stress loading and blood constituents associated with infl- matory processes (IL6, CRP, MMPs, etc.

Patient Specific Hemodynamic Computations Application to Personalized Diagnosis of Cardiovascular Pathologies

by Lucian Mihai Itu (Editor), Puneet Sharma (Editor), Constantin Suciu (Editor) Hemodynamic computations represent a state-of-the-art approach for patient-specific assessment of cardiovascular pathologies. The book presents the development of reduced-order multiscale hemodynamic models for coronary artery disease, aortic coarctation and whole body circulation, which can be applied in routine clinical settings for personalized diagnosis. Specific parameter estimation frameworks are introduced for calibrating the parameters of the models and high performance computing solutions are employed to reduce their execution time. The personalized computational models are validated against patient-specific measurements. The book is written for scientists in the field of biomedical engineering focusing on the cardiovascular system, as well as for research-oriented physicians in cardiology and industrial players in the field of healthcare technologies.
